LASIK 101

Monday, December 08, 2014

Hello, lovelies~ Since there were a lot of questions regarding LASIK, I thought it would be better if I make a special posts dedicated to answering those questions. Sounds good, right?

Does it hurt during the surgery?
No. You will be given anesthesia before the surgery in the form of eye drops to alleviate any future pain during the operation.

Eyes open or closed?
Open, or else they won't be able to operate on the eyes.

How much does the price cost for the LASIK surgery in total?
Around SGD $4,200, already included follow up with the surgeon three times after the operation ( day 1, day 7, and day 30 after operation). Lubricating eye drops are not included, I spent more or less SGD $100 for it.

What are the side effects of LASIK?
I have made a separate post to monitor my follow up after LASIK on the first week and the month after. In short, I felt dryness on my eyes which slowly disappear after around the third week.

What do I feel after LASIK?
I remember feeling slightly tired. My eyes are still blurry, kinda like dream-like filter on a photo app. That's how I see things an hour after LASIK. There is a slight soreness, but I took the suggested medicine and sleep it off.

How long is the downtime after the operation?
Depends on the individual, I'd say. The soreness went away after 2 hours, while the blurry vision went away after around 12 hours. After that, I can see clearly without any discomfort, just a side of dryness that is solved with lubricating eye drops.

Can I wear makeup after LASIK?
No, you have to wait at least a week. I didn't even wear sunscreen because I was afraid I'll get it in my eyes and induce infection.

Can I swim after LASIK?
No, you can't swim immediately after. You can swim after two weeks of LASIK.

How do I choose the eye drops? There are so many types in the market.
Since you are going to use them hourly, go with one that has no preservatives or one that does not contain benzalkonium chloride. Also, you need to make sure to throw away the preservative-free eye drops 12 hours after opening.

People say that the astigmatism and myopia will return a year after operation, is it true?
It could, if you don't take good care of your eyes. The operation is like giving you a fresh start, so you get a chance of correcting all your mistakes from the past. Try to maintain good eye care habit, like the ones I've posted here. That way, you will have lower chance of developing myopia, astigmatism, etc.

That is all of the questions I can think of. If you have more questions, just leave a comment below and I'll try my best to answer them. Thanks for reading and until then, I'll see you later~
