DOAPJ DIY : Oats Activate!

Hello, lovelies~ Oats are quite well-known in the skincare section as being an ingredient that can help moisturize even the most sensitive skin. However, did you know that it can aid in treating acne and blemishes, too?

Its ability to soak up excess oil on the surface of the skin, makes it a great ingredient to be used in most skincare products. The texture of the oatmeal makes it the perfect natural exfoliator because it is gentle on the skin, but strong enough to remove any dead skin cells on the face.

Oatmeal can also be used as a cleanser as they contain 'saponin', which is a soap-like ingredient that can help in removing dirt from the skin. Some sources say that saponins are antifungal in nature to protect the plant from any harm. However, I'm not sure if it is still an antifungal when it's already packaged in industrial boxes.

I like to use this oat cleanser in the morning because of its gentle nature in cleansing the skin. I just grabbed a handful of oats and add enough water just to form a paste. After massaging it for an entire minute, I rinsed my face and pat it dry. Love the smooth feeling of my face in the morning!

After reading all those beneficial properties of oatmeal, I bet you would think twice if you look at an oatmeal now. Today, I'm gonna share a face mask made from oats that can help treat your acne! Let's go!

- Oats (duh!)
- Activated Carbon powder
- Warm water
- Empty bowl
- Brush

Feel free to skip the activated carbon if you don't have one. I just love adding it in my face mask because of the adsorbing nature of the carbon, drawing out any impurities on the skin. More on that later on a separate post, yeah? Oh, you can also add tea tree oil for some acne busting property!

How To
1) Pour hot water over the oatmeal and let it cool. I usually use the instant oats, so I don't need to cook it.
2) When it's cooled, add the activated carbon. Mix it evenly.
3) With the brush, apply the face mask evenly all over the face.
4) Leave it for 10 minutes as it starts to harden like a clay mask.
5) Rinse with water and pat dry.
It dries like a clay mask

My Thoughts

Despite the moisturizing nature of the oats, it actually tightens when it dries, similar like a clay mask. I feel that all my excess oil has been removed from the surface of my skin, leaving it smooth and grease-free. The oatmeal bits on the picture can be reduced by slightly grinding the oats into an almost-powder texture.

I have definitely fallen in love with this homemade face mask because of the cost and effectivity. I mean, for just Rp 18,000, there is 500 grams of oatmeal I can use. If I use 3 grams for each face mask, that means the cost is roughly Rp 108 (oats) + Rp 25 (water) = Rp 133 /mask. That's dirt cheap!

My skin feels smooth and grease-free~
Excuse my not-yet-groomed-and-naked brows
So, I hope you enjoyed this little 'recipe' and let me know what you think about it. Have you tried incorporating oatmeal into your skincare routine? Would love to know your comments! Thanks for reading and until then, I'll see you later~

  1. Aku lagi pake oatmeal cleanser ini nih ci. Twice a day, morning and night. Sebelomnya pake cleansing oil dulu, baru pake ini. Ga pake facial wash lagi. uda mau 2 bln kl ga salah, dan emang oke buat jerawat. Sejak pake ini, break out ku berhenti. Dan kulit keliatan bgt lbh sehatnya. Tapi pake 2x sehari buat tiap hari gini, ada yg bilang ga bagus. Overexfoliate. what do you think?
