Acne Banishing Ingredient: Benzoyl Peroxide

Friday, June 21, 2013

Hello, lovelies~ I’m looking through my blog posts and realized that it has been a long time since I last did a post on one specific ingredient. Well, I’m gonna do it now! Funny story, when deciding on which ingredient I should discuss in this post, I closed my eyes and grabbed one item from my vanity. Turns out to be my acne treatment (that has expired and still not thrown away) Benzolac. However, I’m gonna discuss about Benzoyl Peroxide, not clindamycin.

What is BP?
No, it’s not the name of the oil company. It is a chemical that is commonly found in face cleansers and moisturizers that is targeted for people with mild to moderate acne.

How does it work to combat acne?
Benzoyl peroxide is lipophilic in nature. That means it is able to penetrate through the excess oil (sebum) on the face and counter the problem underneath. This will give the upper hand when dealing with the bacteria known as P. acnes.

Keratinocyte

The previous sentence brings me to the second property of benzoyl peroxide, which is antimicrobial in nature. This will help reduce the population of P. acnes bacteria that is one of the culprit of acne. If there is no bacteria, there will be less chance of acne appearing on the skin.

Another great property of benzoyl peroxide is the ability to increase cell turnover rate. This simply means that the old dead skin cells is being removed faster than 30 days. The whole process of keratinization is being sped up, hence treating acne more effectively. To understand more about the process of keratinization, you can click here.

Whoa! Sounds too good to be true, what’s the catch?
Since it is removing the dead skin cells, it acts like a peeling product. It ‘peels’ off the dead skin that is piling on top of your epidermis (outer part of the skin). This results in dry skin and the appearance of flaky, peeling off skin. This is the most reported side effect in benzoyl peroxide users. Skin redness is also one of the second mostly encountered side effects of benzoyl peroxide.

What scary side effects! Can I use BP and not get those side effects?
I can’t say for sure that these steps will definitely save you from experiencing those side effects, but it may reduce it a little bit because it depends on your skin as well. Usually your skin will tolerate those side effects (dryness and redness) within a week. cream

First thing you can do if you encounter the dry, flaky skin effect is to moisturize that area. If you have oily skin, choose a lighter than cream consistency like a lotion. Apply it on top of the benzoyl peroxide layer after it has sink into the skin.

Always remember to start from the lowest concentration (2.5%) before working your way up to the highest concentration (10%). Lower concentration will give lesser side effects. Besides, everyone has got to start small, right? If the lowest concentration works, why use the highest one? ^_^

To reduce the dryness or redness on your skin, don’t combine benzoyl peroxide with other ‘peeling’ agents such as retinoic acid and alpha hydroxy acid, to name a few. If you do combine them and didn’t experience any of the side effects, then that’s fine. Benzoyl peroxide is usually combined with antibiotic like clindamycin.

Where can I get it in Indonesia?
Before I list the products containing benzoyl peroxide, let me be clear that I am not paid or sponsored these products. You can buy these products at most pharmacy such as K-24.

  • Benzolac: contains benzoyl peroxide. Available at 2.5% and 5% gel.
  • Benzolac CL: contains a combination of benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin. Available at BP 5% and clindamycin 1.2%.

There are other skincare items that contain benzoyl peroxide, but I wanted to cover the spot treatments only.

Bottom line
If you’re having mild to moderate acne, benzoyl peroxide may be something to look into. Just make sure that you do a patch test before applying all over your skin. Dryness and skin redness is common in cases using BP, but it is nothing to be afraid of unless the skin didn’t show signs of improvement after a while. Have you tried it and what does it do for your acne? Let me know in the comments below and until then, I’ll see you later~ ^_^

      1.http://ec.europa.eu/health/scientific_committees/consumer_safety/docs/sccs_o_132.pdf
      2. http://www.euractiv.com/health/scientific-committee-endocrine-d-news-528299
