Knowing Shu Uemura Better

Sunday, March 31, 2013

Hello, lovelies~ I'm sure that everyone is already familiar with the brand shu uemura from Japan, right? It is one of the Japanese brand that is famous for their cleansing oil. I'm going to introduce to you the man behind the brand first before going to the cleansing oils in depth.

Meet Shu Uemura..

In short, he is a Japanese makeup artist who founded shu uemura International cosmetics line. He struggled to make it to the makeup industry ever since he started to take interest in hair styling and makeup.

Shu Uemura left Japan in 1950s and got a big break in a movie called My Geisha, where he transforms a Caucasian actress to look Asian by using makeup. After that movie, everybody starts to recognize his talent and he works along side famous actors during those time, one of which is Frank Sinatra.

In 1960, he launched his first cosmetics line and introduced to the world the famous Cleansing Oil that we know and love today.

Here are a few trivia on the fabulous Shu Uemura.
  • He was the only male student in his class when he attended the Tokyo Beauty Academy!
  • Twice a year, Uemura-san demonstrated his makeup techniques to the public in Tokyo, London, or New York city
  • His eyelash curlers made a cameo in the 2006 movie, Devil Wears Prada
  • He passed away in 2007 due to pneumonia
I hope with this brief post you can get to know more about shu uemura and his work. My favorite quote from him is this.

Did you know that 1 bottle of shu uemura cleansing oil is sold every 7 seconds all over the world?

Wow! I'd have to try it myself to see the potency of it. Look forward to my next post where it's all going to be about cleansing oils. Click here to see the post on shu uemura's cleansing oils!

Until then, I'll see you later~
