Breast Cancer 101: Risk Factors

Monday, October 08, 2012

Hello, lovelies~ It's still October last time I checked, so it's time for another article related to breast cancer. Continuing my series of Breast Cancer 101, today, I am going to discuss the risk factors of breast cancer. So, without wasting any more time, let's start!

Genetic factors

This is one of the most determining factor, especially if you have a first degree relative (mother or sister) suffering from cancer or had cancer in both breasts or had breast cancer at a young age. If you have relatives suffering from both breast and ovarian cancer that also increases the risk of breast cancer.

Aside from that, genetic mutations also plays a big part in determining the incidence of breast cancer.  There are genes in our body that are responsible  called BRCA1 and BRCA2. These genes will increase your risk of having breast cancer by 40%-85%. You can test yourself to see if you have these genes, but let me warn you that the price is sooo expensive.

Hormonal factors

Moving on to the second risk factor, it is the thing that makes us girls crazy every month. Hormones. Heh?  Really? Well, aside from turning us, girls, into Godzillas every month, hormones is one of the risk factors of breast cancer. Let's see if you have any from the bullet points below.
  • Who had their menstruation period when they were 12 years old or even younger than that? I did. An article showed that this a risk factor of breast cancer. Just a touch. A tad. A hint. Not being the greatest risk factor ever.
  • Those who had children before 30 years old may have some protection. However, having no children at all increases the risk of breast cancer.
  • Using contraceptive oral pills appears to increase the risk of breast cancer compared to those not taking them at all. However, the risk is decreased and returned to normal once the consumption of pills are stopped.
  • Those who had their menopause after the age of 55 has a slight increase risk factor of breast cancer.
There are environmental factors, but those are still iffy since there hasn't been enough strong evidence to back them up. So, I'll talk to you guys later~ If you have any questions, just leave it in the comment section and I'll try my best to answer them. ^_^

Akhirnya mereka berdua ngerelain mastekstomi (ngangkat payudaranya) sebelum betul2 kena Ca... Ekstrim amat ya....
