FAQs About Dry Skin

Friday, August 24, 2012

Hello, lovelies~ I was born with oily, acne prone skin, but since I incorporated retinoic acid into my skincare routine, my skin type changed into combination type. The areas around the edges of my mouth and nose are dry and peeling, but my forehead and chin remains oily. So, having little experience in both worlds, I just wanted to share what I know about dry skin so far.

How do I acknowledge dry skin?
This skin type often has problems with their looking all dried up, depleted of moisture. This will further cause their skin to look like they're peeling off.

What should I look for in a moisturizer?
People of this skin type should choose a moisturizer that is emollient in nature and contains humectants. Humectant will help draw moisture from the environment and the emollients will help retain the moisture within the skin. You can find more about humectants in this post.

Furthermore, the consistency of the moisturizer is another thing to look out for. Opt for a moisturizer that is creamy in consistency. This will help hydrate and lock in the moisture within your skin, thus making the skin look plumper and more hydrated.

What if my skin is extra dry and peeling off like crazy everywhere?
If you have very dry skin, I would recommend choosing a serum and moisturizer with collagen inside because it has a stronger moisturizing property compared to usual moisturizers. Also, to ensure that the moisture is locked in with the moisturizer, be sure to apply it while your skin is damp (slight wet).

What products would you recommend for dry skin?
For dry skin, I like Hada Labo Ultimate Whitening Face Wash, Etude House Skin Malgem Essential Toner, Hada Labo Ultimate Whitening Lotion, Skin Aqua UV Mild Milk and L'Occitane Angelica Instant Hydration Mask.

Any tips to reduce the dry skin appearance or improve it?

  • Look for a face wash that doesn't foam because foams are usually meant for oily skin. It tend to reduce any excess oil on the face, thus look for a cream-based cleanser
  • If you want, you can use a washcloth or konjac sponge to gently remove the flaky, dry skin appearance on the face
  • Use a toner that doesn't have alcohol or isopropyl alcohol in it because it will dry out the skin even more
  • Use additional serum with collagen or hyaluronic acid to give more moisture to the skin
  • Apply a hydrating mask every once a week to double boost the moisture (also, to pamper yourself!)
