Skincare Basics: Causes of Acne #1

Friday, May 11, 2012

Hello, lovelies~ Let's talk about acne, shall we? Today, I'm going to briefly discuss one of the causes of acne. This is going to be a bilingual post, so it will be in English and Indonesian.

One of the common cause of acne is the hyperactivity of sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are found at the dermis section of our skin. It functions to produce sebum and secrete it to the skin surface via the hair follicle pore. The activity of the sebaceous gland is controlled by hormones, which tends to peak during puberty (increase in androgen).

Acne occurs because of the imbalance between the increased sebum production and the secretion capacity. This will lead to blockage in the hair follicle by the overload sebum production. Sometimes, inflammation will soon follow afterwards.

In females, the hormone responsible in increasing the sebum production is called Luteinizing Hormone. This specific hormone is released by our body 2 to 7 days prior to menstruation. In males, sebaceous glands are controlled by a hormone called Testosterone.

That is one of the main causes of acne in this post. I will write other causes in a separate post as to prevent this post to be rambly and long. I hope you find this useful and as always, I'll see you in my next post.

  2. I was reading about this hormone just the other day! Apparently, oestrogen stimulates the production of luteinizing hormone and then LH causes ovulation to occur. It's an integram part of the menstrual cycle but I didn't know it was also related to sebum production. It's very intersing!
