Cook With Me : Kare Rice

Monday, August 29, 2011

For those residing at Jakarta, you must have been aware of the public holiday we are having that causes all of the house assistants to go on holidays. Well, right now in Jakarta, Ramadhan is coming, hence the lack of help in the house.

I, for one, likes it when I'm cooking on my own, with no one around. I feel the sense of calm and serenity, leading to relaxing state of mind. Since all of the house assistants here are on holiday, I decided to cook Beef Kare Rice.

I like cooking this specific dish because it's easy to come up with and tastes great. I don't cook this everyday, but on special occasions. ^.^

For this dish, I need equal portions of beef, potatoes and carrots. I'll also need half an onion and 2 and a half blocks of Golden Curry block.
I use the Hot formula, credits to pic
Cut the beef, potatoes and carrots in equal sizes so that they cook at the same time, hence pertaining the same texture at the end of cooking. Chop the onions finely.

Heat a saucepan with 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil or olive oil, it's your pick. Pour the chopped onions into the saucepan, stirring them occasionally for 5 minutes or until the turn translucent. This will help in bringing out the sweetness of the onions.

Next, pour the potatoes and carrots, stirring them until they are coated evenly with the onions, for 2-3 minutes.

The beef is next in turn to be put inside the pot. Stir it evenly with the other previous ingredients, until it's combined.

Add water up to the level where the ingredients are submerged underwater. Wait for the bubbles to emerge, then turn the heat down to low. Simmer this for 15-20 minutes or until all the veggies and meat has soften.

When it has soften, take the saucepan off the heat. Add the blocks of kare to the saucepan and mix it well, until every bit of curry block has been dissolved. Place it on the heat again for 1-2 minutes just to reheat the sauce and thicken it a bit.
Taste as you continuously adding the kare blocks to make sure it's not overwhelming

The finished product.

Pour the kare onto a plate of rice.

That's all there is to it! A simple, quick and delicious meal for two or even three! Hope you'll try this simple recipe next time you're in the kitchen.
