Know Your Ingredients : Mineral Oil

Thursday, July 07, 2011

Well, continuing my series of 'Know You Ingredients', next in line is another controversial ingredient debatable in the cosmetics department, mineral oil.

Mineral oil in bottle form

  • It is a colorless and odorless liquid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum.
  • It is also known by other names such as white oil and liquid paraffin.
  • Mineral oil is often used in baby lotions, cold creams, ointments and cosmetics
  • Mineral oil is categorized as an occlusive moisturizer, which means it locks in the moisture found on the surface of the skin. It prevents moisture from getting out or leaving the skin, hence mineral oil makes a good moisturizer. (Cosmetics & Toiletries, January 2001, page 79; and Cosmetic Dermatology, September 2000, pages 44–46)
  • Ever heard that mineral oil can clog your pores? Research in 2005 showed that it doesn't clog pores, therefore not causing breakouts or acne. (DiNardo, J. C. (2005), Is mineral oil comedogenic?. Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 4: 2–3. doi: 10.1111/j.1473-2165.2005.00150.x)
  • Just because it has a connection with petroleum, it doesn't mean that it acts like petroleum. Once it processed into cosmetic grade mineral oil, it has no resemblance to the original petroleum.
  • You can say that mineral oil is natural since it DOES come from the earth. It doesn't get more natural than that. *Indonesian rant : Namanya juga dari tanah, pasti natural/alami lah. Aneh deh orang-orang. Pake acara bilang mineral oil ga alami lah, kaya petroleum lah, cape deh. Research dulu baru ngomong.. --"*
  • The association between mineral oil and cancer has not been proven. Most of the research or sources saying that it causes cancer are mostly from the natural skin care ranges. So, it didn't have a solid evidence to whether or not it's causing cancer.

  2. Cominica, I know ppl sometime exaggerate the so-called harmful effects of mineral oil. However, if they notice, the ones that warn u abt it is a company that promotes natural products, so it`s a bit biased. o_O

  3. Also, the funds of the research stating that mineral oil is harmful is from those 'natural' companies, so the results are bound to be biased.

  5. Cosme, I know how you feel abt breaking out from mineral oil. Some people are just sensitive against certain ingredients such as, mineral oil, talc, tea tree oil, triglycerides, etc. I happen to also be sensitive against tea tree oil! *sobs*

Yeah, I changed my layout because I thought this is simpler and sweeter. Glad you liked it! ^^

  6. Thank you so much for this informative and well-researched post. I was always curious about why there is so much debate on mineral oil as a potentially harmful ingredient in cosmetics, but I didn't know it has so many beneficial properties as well, and it's great to hear that there is conclusive evidence that it doesn't clog pores/cause acne. Thank you again!
