Haul: China Glaze Holiday 2010

Tuesday, November 23, 2010

I'm back with a nail lacquer haul from China Glaze that I ordered a few weeks ago. I ordered the Holiday 2010 collection because they have fun and jolly colors. There are sixteen colors all together in the collection, but I only manage to get four of them. Here they are.

The swatches on a piece of paper. I haven't got any fake nails to paint these on.

Weekly Product Review: Olay Total Effects Foaming Cleanser

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

In my previous posts, I have reviewed the Himalaya Herbals Neem Foaming Face Wash and loved it. However, when I'm experiencing "dry-skin" phase, that cleanser can be too drying for my skin. It also leaves me feeling tight and flaky on the edges of my mouth and nose. This is where my Olay cleanser comes in to save the day.

Review: The Body Shop Aloe Calming Toner

Monday, November 15, 2010

I'm not usually a big fan of toners because I don't really find it useful, as it's only an extra step in cleansing your face. The purpose of a toner is mainly to remove any residual cleanser or dirt on the face after washing it. Hence, I rarely use them because I find my cleansers to clean my face throughly in the first place. This toner, however, serves a different purpose on my face.

The Body Shop
Aloe Calming Toner
Instantly calm your sensitive skin, while removing impurities and excess traces of cleanser, with a conditioning, alcohol-free toner.

Ingredients
Water, Aloe Barbadensis Gel, Pentylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Sorbitol, Glycerin.

Skin Care Basics: Bar Facial Cleanser

Klik untuk Versi Indonesia

Hellow, fresh face people!

As the title says above, this post is dedicated to facial cleansers and the ingredients commonly found in it. This is a special edition of the series because I will be doing a bilingual post for my Indonesian readers. Also, it helps me practice writing in a more formal form of Indonesia language. To my Indonesian readers, I'm sorry if the language is a bit mixed up, I suck at writing formal Indonesian language.

As we all should know by now, the main purpose of a facial cleanser is to remove the excess oil, dirt and bacteria lurking on the surface of our skin. Back in the old days, bar cleansers are the most common ones found in the market of facial cleansers. However, as technology continues to develop, liquid cleansers are becoming more popular than the ones sold in bar form. In this post, I will be discussing about the different ingredients found in both cleansers.

Let's start off with the bar cleanser. The main ingredient that is commonly and most always will be found in it is alkyl carboxylate or better known to the world as, soap. Saponification is a way of producing soap which combines a triglyceride oil/fat and an alkali to form soap. The types of oil is listed in the table below.

Bar cleansers are more effective in cleaning compared to liquid cleansers, but it's really harsh towards the skin. Cases of erythema, xerosis and pruritus is often found to be related with the use of soap based cleansers.

The reason behind the harshness of a bar cleanser lies in the structure of the cleanser itself. The reasons are listed in bullet points below.

  • Soap-based cleansers contain surfactants with C10 to C14 chain lengths, which is the harshest among other surfactants.
  • Poor rinsability is often found to be related with how it affected the skin because the longer the skin is exposed to the residual surfactant, the more irritated the skin gets.
  • Also, the surfactant gives the bar cleanser a high pH between 9.5-11.0, which is way over skin's natural pH ranging between 4.5-6.0. The more alkaline the skin's pH, the more irritated the skin.
There are four types of bar cleanser often found in the market nowadays.
  • Superfatted soaps. These types of soaps have unreacted fatty acids or oils or even addition of fatty alcohols, fatty acids, and esters during the manufacturing process. This additions gives increasing qualities in mildness and moisturization of the product.
  • Transparent soaps. These soaps have a high levels of humectants which will solubilize the soaps, giving a clear, transparent appearance. However, it still has a high alkaline pH and contains soap as one of the ingredients, which contributes to a high level of irritancy towards the skin.
  • Combination bars. These soaps usually consists of synthetic surfactants combined with natural soaps. Although the type of surfactant tend to reduce the irritancy level, the pH is still ranging between 9.0 to 9.5.
  • Synthetic Detergent bars. Often called as "syndet bars", they are created via esterification, ethoxylation, and sulfonation of oils, fats, or petroleum products. These types of soaps maintain a neutral pH range, unlike the other types of bar soaps. Examples of surfactants often found in these types of bars are:
    • alkyl glyceryl ether sulfonate
    • alpha olefin sulfonates
    • betaines
    • sulfosuccinates
    • sodium cocoyl monoglyceride sulfate
    • sodium cocoyl isethionate
So, that is all for my post about bar facial cleansers. Tell me what you think about this bilingual edition by commenting on the 'comment section'. I'm waiting for your feedback, see ya!

    • alkyl glyceryl ether sulfonate
    • alpha olefin sulfonates
    • betaines
    • sulfosuccinates
    • sodium cocoyl monoglyceride sulfate
    • sodium cocoyl isethionate
Sekian blog post saya mengenai topik pembersih wajah batangan. Dimohon untuk mengkomentari post ini, apabila para pembaca Indonesia menyukai bilingual atau 1 bahasa saja. Kometar di bawah yah, terima kasih.

Hello, discount seekers!
I was going to the mall the other day and I decided to purchase a pillow because mine was 6 years old and it's getting really 'lifeless'. By this I mean, not fluffy anymore. I went to Index at Artha Gading Mall with my bf only to find that they are having a 50% discount on all their pillows, bolsters, towels, bath robes and hand towels. I'm pretty sure there are other thing that are on sale, but those are the things I bought. So, for those of you in Jakarta, be sure to check out Index at Artha Gading Mall for those discounted items. If I'm not mistaken, they will be having the sale until the end of November. Now, for the damages done.

Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Hi there, all you lip balm-loving people!

Remember the huge TBS sale that I posted the other day? Well, one of the items that I got was a lip balm from the Aloe line. I never paid much attention to this line because I was always picking the Tea Tree Oil line, since my skin type is an oily one. However, I was glad that I did pick up some items from the Aloe line, namely the lipbalm and the toner. Let's start.

The Body Shop

Review: My Beauty Diary Apple Polyphenol Mask

Sunday, November 07, 2010

How are you doing, sheet mask fans?

Today, I'm going to review one of my favorite brand of sheet masks, My Beauty Diary. It is a Taiwanese product that sells sheet masks for various skin types. They have a regular line and a premium line, tried it both and love them!

My Beauty Diary Apple Polyphenol Mask

Ingredients
I cleansed my face and fit the mask on my face. Leave it for 15 minutes, remove mask, and massage residual essence to my skin. I use it twice a week, depending on my skin condition.

What I Like About It
  • It cost IDR 12,000.
  • Packaging is cute and safe.
  • The sheet mask are quite durable because I stretched it too hard one day and it didn't tear.
  • The ingredients list are quite remarkable since the fifth ingredient is aloe vera. We all know what aloe vera does to the skin, right?
  • There is a sheet of plastic film in between the mask which makes it easier to apply the mask on my face. It doesn't get all crumpled that usually confuses me as to which one is the upper and lower part.
  •  The mask has a hint of apple scent, but it's not that offensive.
  • It really does a great job at moisturizing my face.

What I Hate About It
  • I don't feel any firming effect on my face.
  • My pores stayed the same. Still visible as they always have been.
  • There is a lemon extract on the ingredients list, which is known as an irritant.

Pictures
Currently, I don't have the picture of the mask, but it's just like an ordinary sheet mask. With all the white colored, ghostly looking appearance when used on my face.
Final Rating
Availability: You can easily find this online; ChicPrincessa & Cupcalicious has them. 2/2
Packaging: Individually wrapped sheet masks that are not too large that it will take up space. 2/2
Price: Compared to TFS & Etude House sheet masks, these are cheaper. 2/2
Ingredients: Wished it doesn't have that lemon extract, but I'm just using it 1-2x/week. 1/2
Effectiveness: It doesn't bring instant results to pores and firming the face. Probably should use it more to evaluate it. So far 0/2

Some Love From Singapore! (^_^)v

Saturday, November 06, 2010

Hello, Hello Kitty lovers!
I can't believe I forgot to post about these lovely things. A few weeks ago, I asked my brother to get me Maybelline's Volume Express Hello Kitty Edition that was already available at Watsons Singapore. He did got me that and I also told him to pick up Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser because mine is already running out. I simply love that cleanser!!

Not only that, my father bought me a new organizer from Filofax because the previous one he got me was a too small to write on. Also, my father got me a brand new Gucci bag, which I believe he purchased at the Changi Duty Free section. It's kinda like a tote bag, I guess. I'm really bad at describing the type of bag, so just see and judge for yourselves what bag it was. ^.^ Anyway, here are the pictures.

I just can't believe I have a Gucci bag
Even the packaging is cute. Curse you and your cuteness, Hello Kitty!! >.<

Review: Etude House Cleansing Dream Fresh Cleansing Water

Friday, November 05, 2010

Hello my lovely people!

Today, I will be reviewing another makeup remover product from my favorite Korean Brand, Etude House. I got this at the EH counter at Kelapa Gading Mall because they were having a 'Buy 1 Get 1' program. I COULD preorder them online, but that takes around a month for the products to arrive and I am one of the impatient people category. I picked up  3 items and got another 3 products. I got a makeup remover, an emulsion, an essence, a toner, a hand lotion, and a makeup base.

Cleansing Dream Fresh Cleansing Water

How I Use It
I squirt a pump onto a cotton pad and swipe it all over my face, avoiding the eye area.

What I Like About It
  • Packaging is cute and chic
  • It has a 'lock' that can be attached, so it won't get accidentally pumped
  • The ingredients list doesn't contain any irritants
  • The bottle has a flat back so it saves space in my drawer
  • It only takes 2 pumps to remove all my face makeup
  • It has a clean fresh scent

What I Hate About It
  • Sometimes, the pump would squirt everywhere
  • A flip-top cap is better
  • The price at the counter is much more expensive than the one preordered or at online shops
