Monthly Favorites

Phanie's Prized Products : July Edition

Saturday, July 31, 2010

Well, I've wanted to do a monthly favorites ever since I started blogging about beauty products a few months ago. However, I always forgot about it since I was too busy doing product reviews and hauls (which I rarely do now. Yay me!). Not to fret though, there's always a first time to everything. So, I will be choosing 5 skincare products, 5 makeup products and 3 hair products each time the month comes to a close. I hope this will last throughout the year, *fingers crossed*.

Oh, since there are going to be 13 products in this post, I will mentioned the pros that each product have so it won't take much of the time to read my ramblings. Also, this list will be known as "The 3P List" or Phanie's Prized Products. Sometimes my brain works, sometimes it just doesn't, pathetic.

Skincare Division

Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover
I got this at a supermarket near my house, which I find very surprising since it's only a little supermarket, yet it has this product from Neutrogena. I like how this takes off my mascara easily and that I can use the rest on my face without having any break outs afterwards. It doesn't feel very oily in the end and you just have to rinse it with warm water subsequently.

Dove Beauty Moisture Facial Foam
I have been using this product on and off ever since I was 15 years old. Lately, I came back to this product because I faintly remembered how it helped me clear my skin of acne/blemishes. I feel this cleanser to be gentle on my face since it doesn't harshly strip all the natural emollients on my skin. However, it does remove the excess oil sitting on top of my face. I rarely purchase an expensive cleanser or cleansers that contains extra ingredients (AHA, BHA, Benzoyl Peroxide, Collagen, etc) because it wouldn't work as well as a moisturizer containing those products will. Besides, this is only a cleanser, which sole function is to remove excess oil and debris on the face without being to harsh that it strips all the skin's natural emollients.

Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF 55
I love this product and have done a separate review on it, just click HERE

Olay White Radiance Intensive Whitening Lotion SPF 24
My first Olay moisturizer. I like that the light texture and how it gives that semi-matte finish, without breaking me out. It also has SPF 24! I don't want to jinx it, but I think my Clinique DDMG has been replaced by this because it's quite rapidly absorbed by my skin. I tried the Olay Total Effects Cooling Essence for oily skin, but find that the texture is too thick and gets absorbed slower than this product.

Benzolac CL
This is actually a combination between 5% benzoyl peroxide & 1.2% clindamycin phosphate, available in most pharmacies. I used this on my blemishes, especially my furious, yellow acne. I have used a 2.5% BP before and now it doesn't seem to have any effects on my blemishes anymore, so I upgraded the level of BP I'm using. It shrinks my blemishes within a day or two, plus with the clindamycin, it helps in preventing acne appearing on that spot.

Makeup Division

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Light
I have also posted a review on how much I love this product and I have bought a full sized version! Check out the review HERE.

Revlon Beyond Natural Skin Matching Makeup in Light
This is a liquid foundation that I'm falling in love with head over heels! It's light on my face, evens out my skin tone,  brightens my complexion and doesn't break me out. I also buy another tube in a Light Medium shade, just in case I'm having those days when I get darker.

Clinique Long Last Lipstick in Blushing Nude
The color matches perfectly with my natural lip color, so it helps in evening out my lips color when I have those dark annoying spots or a previous wound that have healed but blotches my lips. It doesn't dry out my lips and the color tend to last around 4 hours, if you don't let your lips near foods or drinks.Unfortunately, I have misplaced my lipstick so, I'll upload the picture as soon as I find it.

Maybelline Dream Matte Powder
A compact powder that looks really natural and not cakey on my face. I usually apply this with a kabuki brush, as it gives me a more natural and even coverage. True to its name, it gives a matte finish that I'm crazy about.

EOS Lipbalm Sphere in Summer Fruit
It has a very cute packaging, moisturizes decently and since I have no room left for skincare, I have to include it here.

Hair Division

CHI Silk Infusion
A leave in hair protecting product that's used before you apply any heat to your hair. I usually use hair straighteners after applying this product and it does protect hair from heat. It leaves hair silky smooth and shiny. I love how it feels afterwards, so soft and shiny!!

Batiste Dry Shampoo in Blush
A product for those who wants to limit their hair washing frequency. I tried to wash my hair once a day recently because I thought it would damage my hair if I wash it twice a day. This product helps to refresh my hair in between washes and gives my hair a fresh scent. I don't use this everyday, just at times when my hair looks limp, lifeless and oily. If you want the same effect, just use baby powder because I previously did and obtained the same results. It's just less messy with this product.

L'oreal Elvive Nutri-Gloss Shampoo
My friend recommended this product because I have been having acne on my scalp and needed something that will remove the excess oil. She said that it has helped her in healing her problems with oiliness as well. I have to say that I have never been in so much love with a shampoo!! I like how my hair feels very bouncy, soft and shiny after using this product. It lathers up easily and has a nice scent that lasted me throughout the day.

Seagate Free Agent Theater

Seagate: An Unexpected Buy

Monday, July 19, 2010

Good afternoon, everybody! Yesterday, I went to Senayan with friends from uni to a computer convention and I was gonna blog about it, but I fell asleep even before I can watermark the photos. It was an unexpected turn of event really because Gen & I don't even know of the convention. A friend mentioned it to us and we ended up going there with them. At first, Gen wanted to look for his targeted graphic card from NVIDIA, but as we got there, we couldn't find a trace of someone selling graphic cards. All we saw were laptops, netbooks, digital camera, cellular phone and external hard disks. Long story short, there were tons of people in the convention and we bought an external hard drive and a Seagate Free Agent Theater.

The Seagate Free Agent Theater is a device that lets you play HD movies, do Youtube streaming and slideshow picture viewing. We went over to the Seagate stand, wanting to find an external HD for our friend, but stumbled on this hardware. We thought about it and how it would be really useful because we almost always watch youtube and HD movies. This would make our lives easier since all we need is a bunch of movies cramped into an external HD, connect it to a functional TV and voila, movie watching time. We decided to buy it since it is discounted from Rp 1,200,000 to Rp 965,000.

See the slot on the right? That is were you put the Seagate external HD and you can choose to view movies or pictures. However, you will have to buy the external HD from Seagate if you want to insert it into the slot. You can also use another external HD via USB port on the bottom left and connect it to your prefered HD.
We also managed to get the external HD that will fit into the slotted device mentioned above, just for the sake of looking sleek and kEwL. We got the 500 GB 2.5 inch HD along with the orange pouch as a gift, which is makes the HD looks very cheap.

I like their bags as well because of its attractive color and that it's reusable. Well, it does look cute and yellow!

KULIT Institute

KULIT Institute

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Greetings from far away land to you, fellow bloggers/readers! I just came back from a very tiring, but fun experience at an institute for beauticians. It's called KULIT Institute at West Jakarta, which is quite a long distance to travel from my house, but it's all worth it. The thought of working in the field of aesthetic medicine never crossed my mind until I recently developed a liking to studying the ingredients for skincare products. If you followed my blog, you can see how much of a new "addict" I am now to skincare. So, that's when I decided to be a physician in aesthetic medicine because it would be something I would really love to study, although I still love physical medicine and rehabilitation.

I signed up for the course and in the end will receive my certificate within a week's time after the course had ended. The night before the first day of the course was quite nerve wrecking for me because it has been a while since I attended a lecture and wake up early in the morning. Lately, I have been staying up all night, doing Gawd knows what and wake up around 10 a.m. I set my alarm clock and hoped that I won't be late for the first day. I didn't. As a matter of fact, I got there half an hour before the class started and got materials, such as lecture notes and few samples.

The classroom is a very comfortable and friendly environment when used for studying. The tables are set in the shape of a "U", making it easier to see each other's faces when they're talking, without having to bother turning our heads to the back when someone is speaking. The maximum participants attending the course is limited to 10, so that it would be easier to teach or share the information.

Inside the classroom, there's a door that leads to another room for treatments and demos, sort of a workshop. It's quite spacious, with 3 beds and 2 countertops, also a facial machine. The room feels very fresh as there are windows, so sunlight enters nicely to lit the room but, not sizzling the room to a grilling temperature.

We have classes regarding the theories behind every procedure, continued with the practicing the materials on patients. Procedures done are electrocauterization, microdermabrassion, intralesion injection for inflamed acne, chemical peeling, facial electrotherapy, etc. There are also basics for botox injection and dermal fillers, but it's not discussed in-depth as the materials are for advanced aesthetics. However, in my person opinion, I would say that for now, the basic botox and fillers are enough for me. Maybe I'll learn later on for the more advanced dermal fillers.

So, this is the last day of the aesthetics training and we have just finished a dermal filler procedure on one of the participants. No, I'm not gonna tell you who underwent the procedure, I'm not a tattle-tale. Tee hee. The one standing on my left wearing a black blouse and the one next to her are the teachers. Thank you so much doctors for a very enriching experience and interesting course!

SouLazy

Predators & SouLazy

Wednesday, July 14, 2010

Ever had one of those days when you feel like you just can't write or blog? I had that yesterday. It was terrible, I hate that feeling. I know I'm not that good of a writer, but I just like to blog about something in particular. Be it my feelings, how my day went, a product I liked, etc. I was supposed to write about how my day went yesterday, but I just got stuck after writing a sentence about what I wanted to do yesterday. So, I thought I might as well stopped writing, if that's gonna be that bad and hard. Anyway, I feel a lot better now and will now tell how my day went yesterday.

I went to catch a movie with my bf yesterday at Artha Gading Mall where we watched Predators. Now, I'm not that fond of Predators, even the one where Arnold starred it. I must admit that the special effects were amazing because the appearance of the predators are very fluid and smooth. Even though I got bored in some of the scenes, but there are some high points in the movie. I guess what makes it a bit boring is because it isn't something new, instead it's just something that has been repeated over & over again since the 1980s, then they're off fighting the aliens three times. It's just too much.. Although, I can say that it's quite entertaining =p especially the part where the credits roll, which means that I have to exit the theater and not spend more time watching it.

We picked up a few glasses from Index and ACE Hardware, cocktail glasses to be exact. Why do we need cocktail glass you ask? It's just because we NEED them. No more questions! I'm kidding.. You're about to find out why we need them in the next picture. Are you ready??

Tadaaaa!! Yes, this is the reason why we need to have cocktail glasses, S-O-U-L-A-Z-Y. You might be wondering why it looks like a thermos for primary school kids and what does that have to do with us getting cocktail glasses. If you haven't understood up to this point, I salute you and your naive personality for not knowing first hand that this is a cocktail.

Soulazy sells freshly made cocktails and shooters just like this one. Each and every one of these cocktails is made to order and packed neatly in a thermos, as to keep the temperature of the drinks ice cold , hence increasing the drinking pleasure. Here is the best part. SouLazy delivers the drinks that you've ordered right to your doorstep, with a delivery charge of course. Hell, nothing's free in this world, dude.

Look at that clear, thirst-quenching, appletini. Imagine that going smoothly down your esophagus as you relax on your couch/bed watching some movies with friends. This is especially good for you who doesn't know how to mix your own drinks or too lazy to whip up your own Cosmo. Now, how to order you ask? Just check out their website SouLazy and ask away. You'll find that the seller/bartender is very kind, responsive and very welcoming as he answers each and every single question that you might have in your mind. Well, not probably all of your life-related questions, but.. yeah, you get the point.

Storing them is also easy. Just popped them into your fridge and you're basically done. The seller told me that it would last the drinks around a week in the fridge but, seriously, I don't think it would last for 5 days if it were in my fridge. Both of us would've gulped a glass every morning, afternoon and night each day. This is basically how I store them since my fridge has a chiller part for drinks mainly.

So, that's all of what I basically did yesterday. Oh, I also ordered macaroni gratin from a seller at Kaskus, you can check out his thread Macaroni Gratin yesterday and it was uber tasty!! You can taste the creaminess of the milk and melted cheese, the savoury smoked beef and chunky mushroom in between those al dente macaroni. Just to make you guys envious, here are the pictures of the macaroni. With this, I bid you, adieu.

Grated cheese on top with smoked beef in between

Hauls

[HAUL] Revlon

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Hello, people, I'm back with a haul and this time it's from Revlon. I got these at Watsons Kelapa Gading Mall 3, it's a small Revlon counter, but surprisingly quite satisfactory, products wise. At first, I only wanted to get Revlon's Beyond Natural in Light shade, but ended up getting other products. Probably needed the retail therapy anyway after the defeat of Germany by Spain. I still love you though, Schweinsteiger!

So many products from Revlon in one buy! Yeah, I thought so too, but it feels sooooo good after retail (makeup) therapy, because I tried so hard not to have gadgets and computer related retail therapy. It's just waaaay too pricy, so this is a good alternative. So, let's go through the items 1 by 1.

First item I got was the Blemish Concealer in Light Medium shade. I figured I'm gonna try this out since I have  blemishes and it is a liquid concealer with a doff applicator, much like a lip gloss applicator.

It has a 0.5% salicylic acid, which I just read after I got home. Well, well, well, this just won't do. How can 0.5% salicylic acid help in controlling my blemishes?? Well, at the very least, I got a decent concealer, despite the fact that it won't help in clearing my blemishes.

If you read my previous post, you should've known that I use Smashbox's Photo Finish Light as my foundation primer and that I love it to death! When I was browsing the other day, I found out about this product that is supposed to have the same properties as the Smashbox. So, I went ahead and purchased this clear, transparent gel in hopes that it will be able to replace my previous primer. *fingers crossed*

When I saw this eyeshadow quad, I just know I had to get it for my mom. She loves her brown colors very much and thought that this might be a good pallet for her. I swatched it at the counter and found that the colors are very pigmented. This quad is in Copper Spice and has two sponge tip applicators inside the box.

I've always wanted to get their lippies and finally got it. This is the Revlon Colorstay Lipstick.

These are the two colors that I got because I'm into nudes lately. I'm still loving my coral and mauve colors, but I'm falling in love with nudes now.

I also picked up a Revlon lipgloss in 040 Nude Lustre which compliments the 202 Nude Allure lipstick very well. The packaging is very classy and looks a little bit like the Dior Addicts.

Here are the lip products that I got. See the gloss on the far right side? Pretty classy packaging, don't you think?

Here are the swatches of the lippie and gloss in natural light.

Nude Allure on my lips with flash. It's a bit orange on my lips and looks a little weird.

Nude Allure on my lips without flash. I had hopes for this lippie =(

Natural Cashmere on my lips with flash. Surprisingly, it looks better than the last one.

Natural Cashmere on my lips. The more I look at it, the more I love this color.

Last, but not least, is the Beyond Natural in 210 Light shade. I got this before but, the shade was a bit yellow on my skin, so, I used it sparingly. This is the lightest shade in this collection and I hope this will be more suitable for my skin tone. I am currently in love with this product because it's not very heavy, but the coverage is medium and this is very buildable.

That was it for my haul/retail therapy, it feels very very good. Try it out sometime, but don't blame me once you get addicted. So, what did you do when you feel down?

{REVIEW] Smashbox Photo Finish Light Foundation Primer

Thursday, July 08, 2010

I'm quite new to the primer department in terms of makeup stuff. This is my second primer, Etude Coverfit Primer for Oily Skin being the first one. I didn't use Etude's anymore because it doesn't provide a superb finish like Smashbox's. Let's start the review.

Our latest primer innovation! Our new oil-free, 60% water based primer is ideal for oily, acne-prone or sensitive skin. This silky blend of vitamins and antioxidants helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores for visibly softer skin and can be worn alone or under foundation to increase its longevity. The revolutionary formula has oil absorbers for a smooth matte finish all day, light diffusers to minimize the appearance of imperfections, and vitamin C and peptides to help even skin tone and promote collagen production for a flawless future. In a new square airless pump for freshness to the last drop.

Winner of Allure Magazine's Best of Beauty Award for Best Primer.

Ingredients: Water, Cyclopentasiloxane, Polysilicone-11, Butylene Glycol, Ethylene/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Carbomer, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Triethanolamine, Decyl Glucoside, Caprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Hexylene Glycol, Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate, Oligopeptide-10

I bought mine in a 15 ml size or a travel size and had been using it for a month. It has a lighter texture and finish compared to my previous Etude primer, which is more to the sticky side. It is, however, quite pricy, retailing at around Rp 150000-ish for the travel size. The full size is around 36 USD at 30 ml, I think, but it has a pump which I like so very much.
Here is how it looks like out of the tube. It's a white gel-like substance that goes on very silky once blended on my face.

This is how it looks like half blended on my arm. It's white at first, but once blended, it'll become transparent and silky smooth every time I touch it.

Why I like this product?
  • Feels really light on my face, as if wearing nothing.
  • Leaves a silky smooth finish on my face.
  • Doesn't break me out!
  • Evens out the surface of my face. It fills in the pores, giving a smoother appearance.
  • Controls the excess oil on my face perfectly. I stayed semi matte all day! Semi matte, because I sometimes perspire.
  • Makes makeup stay longer, without having the need to frequently touch up or blot.

How I use this product?
After my moisturizer and before my foundation. Sometimes, I skipped the foundation and just go straight for the concealer and loose/translucent powder. I usually apply twice on areas that have blemishes, leaving them dry first, then applying the second coat. I find that by having two coats on the imperfections will help to settle the concealer and making them stay putt all throughout the day.

What I think of this product?
Overall, I LOVE this primer and has not found a replacement or dupe for this. I have bought Revlon's Beyond Natural Skin Smoothing today and will give it a try. I do hope it can replace Smashbox's primer because it's so hard to get Smashbox products here.

That is all of the review for today, I hope it can help you decide on whether to buy this product. What are your makeup primers?
