Skin Care Basics: Wrinkles & Chemical Peeling

One of the famous myth says that a skin needs to be moisturized at all times to prevent wrinkles forming on it. Is it true?

Well, it's not true and has always been false. We cannot prevent the formation of wrinkles on one's skin because it is a natural process of aging as the elastin and collagen breaks down faster than they can actually form as seen on the picture of 'Intrinsic Aging' below.

This is also made worse by environmental factors, such as the sun, pollution, alcohol use on skin, smoking, and facial expressions

This unbalanced process will eventually lead to fine lines and wrinkles as the stratum corneum piles up and thicken with dead skin cells, causing a very thin layer of dermis.

As seen on the picture above, the area with the wrinkle has a thinner layer of dermis compared to the epidermis (stratum corneum). What makes your skin look supple and firm is the layer called dermis, which needs to be thicker than the epidermis. Simply put, the thicker the dermis layer, the better and wrinkle-free looking your skin is

There are ways to make you dermis thicker and slabbing tons of moisturizer on your skin isn't one of them. The procedures involved in making your epidermis layer (or stratum corneum to be exact) thinner so to eliminate all those dead skin cell as often seen in chemical peeling procedures. However, be sure to consult to your doctor before doing this procedure.

Chemical peeling is a process where a chemical solution is applied evenly to a patient's face in order to slough off the dead skin cells, revealing a softer smoother skin which is usually the dermis. There are different types of chemical peeling solution that will cater to your skin's needs, be it dull skin, aging skin, acne prone skin, etc. This solution is designed to penetrate deep into a certain layer of the skin, depending again on your skin's need, and sheds the dead skin cells off. It usually determined by the aesthetician or dermatologist how deep the solution will penetrate your skin. As seen below, the solution can infiltrate down to the stratum basale, but it can also stop in the middle, all depending on your aesthetician/dermatologist.

You might be thinking that one time when you put moisturizer on your skin, the fine lines are gone, how do you explain that, Phanie? Well, here's a thought. Looking back on the picture above about how wrinkles have sort off a gap between the skin? That's where your moisturizer go. In between the gaps, which helps in making the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles less visible, but keep in mind that they are still there. So, if you want to make those fine lines and wrinkles less visible, then by all means, wear moisturizer to make it happen. However, if you want better results without having to add more and more moisturizer each second of every day, then choose a procedure similar to a chemical peeling.

Once again, I'm not stressing you to stop using a moisturizer, but to use it for a different purpose. One of it is to hydrate your skin so that it will be soft and smooth, instead of dry and flaky. Not for the purpose of preventing wrinkles. If you want to prevent wrinkles then avoiding the sun and wearing appropriate sunscreen is a good way to start

Accesories Haul from Silver Leica

You may have heard me talking about an accessory online shop called Brisingamen Accesoire where I purchased the LV pattern flower necklace from my previous posts. Now, a new online store with a concept of "Sweet handmade decorations and accesories" is here by the name of Silver Leica. It is affiliated with Brisingame Accesoire being the little sister online store. The products they offered is all about chic, sweet and cute as the decorations are mostly candies, chocolates, and cakes. Also, marshmallows are included. I bought three necklaces yesterday simply because they are cute. The following pictures will prove the cuteness of these necklaces.

Bubble wraps around the product.
Each necklace is neatly wrapped and stored inside a zip lock bag.
Marshmallow and Lollipop necklace. Cute!!
Macaroon and pearls necklace. The macaroon is sturdy and solid, instead of empty. It's a good thing, btw.
By far, my favorite necklace. It symbolizes the one cake I can't make.
Another marshmallow necklace, but sort off a double necklace.
Close up on the marshmallow. *LOVE!*

That's all I got for this order, but I'm pretty sure that I will order again when she has more necklaces and cute desserts on it. I'm gonna tag her in this note so you can click on the "Tagged" section located on the upper left, jut below my profile picture. The necklaces are all affordable, most of them are under IDR 100,000, but the quality is guaranteed. The candies decorations are actually squishy! Just like a real marshmallow, but don't squish it too hard, it'll break. It is, after all, still a decoration, not meant to be squished all day long.

So, be sure to go to to see more of her products there!

Weekly Product Review: Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen SPF 15

For this week's WPR or product of the week, I've decided to review a sunscreen lotion from Aveeno. I've had this for around 4 months, but haven't actually finish the product since it's so huge and I don't use it everyday. I was thinking of putting it a travel-size container so I can carry it with me for re-application.

Aveeno Active Naturals
Daily Moisturizing Lotion with Sunscreen SPF 15

This breakthrough body lotion with Natural Colloidal Oatmeal and patented ACTIVE PHOTOBARRIER COMPLEX moisturizes skin for 24 hours and provides broad-spectrum protection from aging UVA and burning UVB rays. The non-greasy lotion absorbs quickly and contains no added fragrance, making it ideal for everyday use.

The Natural Colloidal Oatmeal found in AVEENO® help to leave a protective barrier, which prevents water loss to help maintain moisture all day long. The AVEENO®oatmeal formulas are also known to soothe and moisturize itchy, extra dry skin.

How I Use It
Half a pump of this is adequate for my arm. I would apply this 15 minutes before going out under the hot rays of the sun.

What I Like About It
  • The price is affordable, retails at IDR 175,000. I got mine at
  • It has value for money since you get 354 ml of product
  • It has a pump, which makes dispensing the product all the more easier
  • The texture is thick, but blends easily into the skin
  • It's not greasy at all
  • There is no fragrance in the product, but I can detect a slight oat-y smell. It's like I''m eating a bowl of oatmeals
  • My skin feels moisturized all day, but not 24 hours like it claims to

What I Hate About It
  • At times when my skin is not that dry, this will feel very heavy on the skin
  • It's not available in my local drugstore/supermarket/Watsons. I have to order it online

Review: Mitu Finesse Facial Cleansing Wipes

Makeup remover towelettes are great, especially when you are on the go and needed to have a freshly cleansed face. There are a lot of brands of towelettes out there ranging from MAC, Neutrogena, Garnier, Purederm, etc. This product is a local brand from Indonesia that is designed to remove your makeup when you're out and about.

Mitu Finesse
Facial Cleansing Wipes
  • gently cleanses
  • refreshes
  • removes makeup, even waterproof mascara
Cleanse, tone and effectively remove makeup, even waterproof mascara. It is also enriched with cucumber extract, chamomile extract and aloevera extract that purifies skin.

How I Use It
I take a sheet of towelette and gently (with minimal tugging) wipe it all over my face. For the eyes, I hold it on my eyelids for around 30 seconds before swiping all of the eye makeup away.

What I Like About It
  • The price is ridiculously cheap! I got it for IDR 3,500 for 10 sheets.
  • It's easily found in most supermarkets in Jakarta
  • The size is compact, making it easy to carry for travel
  • The ingredients are amazing because the aloevera extract is the fourth ingredient on the list
  • 1 sheet of wipes is enough to remove my face makeup
  • My face feels refreshed afterwards
  • There is a slightly floral and fruity scent, but nothing offensive
  • It takes of my waterproof mascara from Mavala. I don't know about Majolica Majorca, though

What I Hate About It
  • It has a flap covering, which might be fast drying if you don't close it properly
  • It's only for normal to oily skin. Sorry, dry skin people! :(

Pretty In Pink Tag

It's October and we all know what it is. It's both Halloween and Breast Cancer Awareness month. Well, the second one is actually more important than the first one. Read all about BCAM here.

I've decided to do a you tube tag, but since I don't have a camera that is good quality and poor internet upload speed, I'm just gonna post it here. So, the tag is basically a collection of all your beauty products that is in the color pink, which is breast-cancer related. Feel free to do this tag because I tag... YOU!

1. SteelSeries Ikari Laser Mouse and Mouse pad
My boyfriend got this for me a few months ago and I love it! It fits perfectly in my hands, has a precise control and it looks girlie, instead of nerdy!

2. L'oreal Nutri Gloss Conditioner
It gives me bouncy and fluffy hair, also eliminated itchiness that I have.

3. Etude House Cookie Blusher
I don't know the name of color, but it's a peachy pink that gives my face a natural looking flush.

4. e.l.f Mechanical Eyelash Curler
It's pink! That's why I got it.

5. Eyelid Protector
I don't remember the brand because I threw the packaging away. It's for protecting your eyelids when applying mascara. It really helps in getting every single lash mascara.

6. Koji Eye Talk
This is an eyelid glue that helps to make that eyelid crease, sinceI don't have an eyelid crease. It's easy to use and lasts around 6-7 hours.

7. Etude House Angel Kiss Lip & Cheek in Lovely Angel
It's a cream blush that rosy pink color I featured in one of my favorites post.

8. Epi Care Stick
This helps in plucking off the small, fine facial hair on my face, if I have some. It's a little bit painful, but I got used to it.

9. SKIN79 Diamond The Prestige BB
One of my first BB cream that I'm in love with. It evens out my skintone and conceals some of my small acne scars in an instant with my fingers. No brush needed.

10. Batiste Dry Shampoo in Blush
I also feature this in one of my favorites post because this helps me takes off the excess oil on my scalp.

11. Etude House Peach Water Gloss in Watermelon
It's actually a pink color, but the camera sorta washed out the color.

12. Clinique Moisture Surge
This is what literally saved my skin back when I first used tretinoin. It made my skin dry, but thanks to this moisturizing lotion, the flakes on my face is invisible. It's supposed to be a pale pink color, but for some reason, my camera really hates me today.

13. Clinique Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser
This is one of my favorite water-soluble makeup remover. It's easy to use, takes off all my makeup and pink!

14. Herbal Essences Dangerously Straight Shampoo & Conditioner
My conditioner ran out, so I just put the shampoo here. I have a review of it.

That's all of my pink products that I like. How about you? Comment down below would be much appreciated.

My Must Have Items: Sling Bag Edition

This is another post on the series of my must have items, but the Sling Bag edition, which is one my favorite type of bag. If you don't know what a sling bag is, it's a type of bag that can be carried over one shoulder, which is kinda similar to a messenger/paper boy bag. Since I am a T-shirt and jeans kinda girl, I like my bag to be a casual and chic looking, instead of a feminine one.

Now, you might be thinking why I have different items in each bag. It's because I wear different makeup when I'm wearing my T-Shirt.

I put all of my beauty-related products into a small plastic bag that has a picture of a chicken/duck on it. I got it a t Daiso Artha Gading for IDR 22,000. It carries most of my stuff and fits snuggly into my sling bag without weighing it down.

Now, I have a few items that are similar to my previous post, on the tote bag edition. Wet wipes, tissue, hand sanitizer and oil blotting film are always in my bag. So, here are the few items that are 'residents' in my sling bag, aside from the above.

1. EOS Lip Balm Sphere
It's cute, unique, moisturizing and makes the experience of applying lip balm so much fun!

2. e.l.f Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 in Rosy Beige
Sometimes I just rushed out of the house without any makeup but a sunscreen. This helps when I'm applying makeup in the car just to even out the skintone and conceal any redness on my cheeks. It's very light, matches my skintone perfectly and moisturizes my skin very well during my 'flaky' times!

3. TheFaceShop Sake Nourishing Body Lotion
I love this lotion because it really smooths out my skin when it's having a 'rough' day. It has a pleasant smell of rice wine fermentation, at least that's what I believe the smell is. I have to put it in a travel-size pump because the bottle itself is huge!

4. Etude House Peach Water Gloss in Apricot Water
This is one of my favourite gloss from Etude House because it's not sticky and gives a natural looking gloss. This one is a peach-colored gloss which makes it even more perfect when I'm wearing T-Shirts, not making it look too feminine.

5. Clinique Long Lasting Lipstick in Blushing Nude
Again, I'm always equipped with nude lipsticks wherever I go. I love the creaminess of this product and how it doesn't dry out my lips. The color stayed for quite a long time, around 4 hours when I'm not eating/drinking.  Sorry the color isn't showing to perfectly on camera, for some reason today, my camera hates me :(

6. Etude House Kissful Tint Chou in #02
This is a perfect item when I don't feel like using any lipsticks or gloss because it is a lip stain with a glossy finish. The gloss doesn't stay last that long, but the color does! Only downside to this product is I have to use my hands to evenly apply it all over my lips.

7. Band-aids
I am someone who is very clumsy, in a sense where I have cuts and scrapes on my arms. Often times, I'm always in a rush and didn't actually see where I was going and ended up bumping the desk or even scratched myself on the table corner. Band-aids are always handy to cover the affected area and keeping it clean and not infected.

That is all in my tote bag, aside from the previously mentioned items such as, hand sanitizer, oil blotting film, etc. You'll notice that I didn't have any compact with me because I prefer to blot the excess oil for touch ups.

My Must Have Items: Tote Bag Edition

I thought I would start this series of what are my must have items for each occasion, be it travelling for a vacation, going to a party or the mall. In this edition, I'm going to be posting the tote bag edition. I don't have a lot of tote bags, I think I only have a few of them. My current favorite is from Longchamp and I use a handbag organizer inside to keep it neat and organized.

1. Sunscreen
This is a must wherever I go. I hate the sun and its invisible, skin damaging rays. Simply put, the rays of the sun breaks down the elastin and collagen on our skin, leading to wrinkles and premature aging. I always have a small bottle with me in my bag. The current one that I'm using is from Etude House called the Aqua Drop Sun Guard SPF 33/ PA ++. This sunscreen has a very light, fluid texture without having a greasy finish. that most sunscreens tend to have.

2. Lip Balm
I hate having dry, chapped lips so, I always carry lip balms/chapstick with me everywhere I go. I avoid licking my lips because saliva can dry out the lips, instead of moisturizing it. Of course, I can't just rely on lip balm for soft lips, but also drinking 8 glasses of water each day. My favorite lip balms are Nivea essentials and Carmex Cherry SPF 15.

3. Hand Cream
I know I have oily skin on my face, but my body has a very dry skin type. My skin is so very dry that I once had scales on it! One of the driest part of my body are my hands. Hand creams are very useful, especially after washing my hand, they feel tight. I just slab on some cream and feel moisturized instantly. My favorite is the Etude House Rich Butter Hand Cream coz' it's moisturizing and non-greasy.

4. Hand Cleansing Products
Ever had one of those experience where u touch something and ended up with sticky, smelly hands? I know, gross. Very gross. That's why it's best to prepare cleansing wipes, preferably wet ones. This comes in handy because you won't always have access to water for washing your hands. These wipes are the next best thing. If you're not fond of wipes, you can always try a hand sanitizer so you won't have to fuss about where to throw your tissue away. I'm using a local brand called Mitu for the wet wipes and Cussons Carex for hand sanitizer.

5. Oil-Blotting Film
As you would have already know, I have oily, acne prone skin type. Even though I used a primer to reduce my 'oiliness', I would still have excess oil at the end of the day. I will never leave home without this item. It's great for touching up and making my face stay matte. I'm using the Clean n Clear oil blotting film because they are more durable than sheets.

6. Medicine Case
I have been having vertigo ever since I was in the 8th grade, around 12 years now. I always have to have my medicine just in case the world spins from my perspective. I also have pain killers, cough medicine, and some cheweable antacids. I got this case at Daiso for IDR 22,000 located in Mal Artha Gading.

7. Lipstick
I usually carry a nude lipstick to match my lip tone because I sometimes have dark lip pigmentations and needed to hide them. Nude lip color is perfect for everday wear that doesn't bring too much attention, but covers the imperfections brilliantly. My current favorite is from Revlon Colorstay in Natural Cashmere. It's soft, smooth and doesn't dry my lips!

8. Compact Powder & Kabuki Brush
After touching up with the oil blotting film, I like to make sure my face stays matte for longer periods of time. Hence, I powder my face to have that matte finish that I crave for. I like using a kabuki brush because it gives me an even application all over my face. I love using Maybelline's Dream Matte Powder & Ecotools Retractable Kabuki Brush. No matter how much I use this powder, it doesn't give a cakey finish on my face.

9. Perfume

This comes in great use especially when you're taking public transportation to the mall. All those smells that are so putrid and yucky will be eliminated if I bring perfume in my tote bag. It's also great after a few hours in the mall to freshen up. I currently carry my Etude House Petit Bijou in Peach Touch, which smells really fruity and sweet!

10. Nintendo DS

I hate waiting and love video games. Put them together and you get a great combination of the 'waiting game'. Bad pun, I know, but you get it. Nintendo has always been my favorite video game console that I love ever since I started playing NES. Well, this is beneficial if I have to wait for someone to show up to meet ups and have fun while waiting!
