Sugar Cookies

I was reading Miiko the other day and found this simple and cute recipe to make sugar cookies. The story was that Miiko decided to make something for her family members, but since she no more money left, she baked them cookies, sugary ones. Yes, people, I know this is only a story in a comic book, but because the drawings are soooo kawaiii, I decided to give it a try.

Anways, here are the ingredients
100 g unsalted butter
60 g sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon water
200 g all purpose flour

How to make them?

Preheat oven to 180 C
Separate the egg white and egg yolk.
Whisk butter and sugar until smooth.
Stir in egg white, mix well.
Add all purpose flour and water, mix well.

Chill in refrigerator for 30 minutes up to 1 hour.
Roll the dough on floured surface and use cookie cutter to mould the dough.

Put on an already buttered pan
Dab cookies with egg yolk
Bake for 15-20 minutes

You can decorate it with frostings, but I like them this way.

Tofu House a.k.a Warung Tahu

The first time we knew about this restaurant was when we passed by for a few times every time we're going to Kelapa Gading Mall 5. It seemed like a small restaurant and not many cars were parked in front of it, which seemed to imply that the food wasn't that good.

However, this evening Gen and I actually had a thought of going there, since we have been delaying our visit to this restaurant. The moment we arrived inside, it was neat and had 3 air conditioners (I think..). We looked at the menu and found that there were various meals with tofu as the basic ingredients. There's tofu steak, tofu wotie, tahu petis, tofu meatballs, etc.

Gen ordered the tahu telor and I ordered the Tofu Steak. Both of us ordered the tofu wotie, tahu petis and doughnut tofu as the side dishes (quite a mouthful, huh?). For dessert, we ordered ice cream made with soy milk as a basic ingredient. I ordered the chocolate flavored and Gen ordered vanilla.

The first meal that came was the tofu doughnut. It wasn't very tasty as the doughnuts are cold to the touch and quite bland, despite the fact that it had toppings on top. Funny thing about this doughnut is the taste of the tofu lingering within every bite. I didn't finish mine because it was really tasteless and cold, not to mention quite tough for a doughnut.

Later, the wotie tofu came, all 5 pieces of it. The fillings were minced chicken, tofu (d-u-h~!), green onions, ginger and garlic. Well, that's all I taste anyway, pardon my senses. Unlike the doughnut before, this one is really really really tasty (I mean it~!). It really has the perfect texture, golden and crispy on the bottom and throughly cooked on top. It was balanced well in the matter of taste, not too salty and not too oily. This is soon to be one of my favorite menu in this establishment ^o^.

Eventually, our main dishes arrived, Tahu Telor for Gen and Tofu steak for me. Gen said that the taste was fresh and the sauce had a clean taste to it. The only thing lacking is the amount of beansprouts laid on top of the dish. As for the tofu steak, it had quite a funny taste to it and by that I mean that in a good way. It's flavorsome, but I get quite bored with the taste after some time.

After the appetizers and main course, we move on to order the dessert. I chose chocolate ice cream and Gen had vanilla ice cream. These were made from soy milk and the taste was fresh. I really enjoyed this visit to Warung Tahu because the ice cream tasted like the one my grandmother use to make when I had my birthday party as a little girl.

Overall, we enjoyed the food at Warung Tahu and I recommend the Tofu Wotie and chocolate ice cream. The soy milk made here is also home made and taste different than store bought. Just be sure that u like tofu before coming here~!

O Bentooo~~

Good morning everyone~! I woke up quite early today (5.45 a.m.) because I slept early last night. I immediately went to the kitchen to make breakfast, but then, I think to myself, why not make Gen lunch altogether? So, I took some ingredients namely sausage, an egg, green beans and tomatoes and started cooking.

It's been a while since I made lunch for someone. The last time I made these types of bentos was way back in high school. Anyways, I made little octopus sausages, but since there is no black sesame seed, they ended up having no eyes, poor octopuses T_T.

I also made Tamagoyaki with green onions and cheese as filling (Gen loves cheese~!). I also put some strawberries since he loves them ever so much.

Chocolate Truffles

Sometimes you don't need a reason to have chocolate, be it in the day or in the middle of the night. So, here is a recipe that I found on the web, from Ina Garten, my favorite! You can find the recipe HERE, but if you can't open it, here it is.
  • 1/2 pound good bittersweet chocolate
  • 1/2 pound good semisweet chocolate
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons orange flavored liqueur, optional (i don't use them)
  • 1 tablespoon prepared coffee
  • 1/2 teaspoon good vanilla extract
  • Confectioners’ sugar
  • Cocoa powder

How To Make

Chop the chocolates finely with a sharp knife. Place them in a heat-proof mixing bowl.

Heat the cream in a small saucepan until it just boils. Turn off the heat and allow the cream to sit for 20 seconds.

Pour the cream through a fine-meshed sieve into the bowl with chocolate. With a wire whisk, slowly stir the cream and chocolates together until the chocolate is completely melted.

Whisk in the orange flavored liqueur, if using, coffee, and vanilla.

Set aside at room temperature for 1 hour.

With 2 teaspoons, spoon round balls of the chocolate mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Roll each ball of chocolate in your hands to roughly make it round.

Roll in confectioners’ sugar, cocoa powder, or both.

These will keep refrigerated for weeks, but serve them at room temperature.

Wondering why there is no picture of the end product? We ate them all and forgot to take pictures of them. Really sorry, maybe later when I make them again. Well, this is how it should look like, more or less.

Evening Mini Surprise

I had a one-free-hassle day this Thursday and it was spent at home, slacking my a** off in front of the TV and laptop. Yes, I seldom use my PC with a 28" monitor now because someone is enjoying his games so much. But, never mind, I'm really liking using my Vaio notebook or netbook, as my boyfriend implied, lately.. I don't really know why, maybe because of its comfort in typing this blog. Well, moving on, I was just browsing through the internet, when my best friend IMed me saying that she wanted to give me food, Loraine Quiche to be exact.

I never had home-made quiches before, never bothered making them too. I've been delaying baking savory treats for a long time, for one reason or another. Not that I hate them, of course.

So, the "package" arrived safely at my house and when I opened it, there it was. Two pieces of Loraine Quiches with beef and bacon as a filling.

Unfortunately, I told Gen to choose first and he picked the right one (the one with lotsa filling.. grrrr), which left me with the other one. The first bite gave a crunch as I bit into the crust, not too buttery, great texture and rather sweet. The filling was custardy and savory as I tasted the beef and bacon chunks inside it. It was yummy as it fit to my taste, not too oily or salty. I can't wait for the next quiche that she'll make, even got a name for it. Neng's Finest... well, that's what I got so far..

Glosis Restaurant

This restaurant has been an old time favorite ever since 4 years ago. I ate there with my brother and father when it first opened. It was located in Kelapa Gading Mall 3, European Walk ( that is the place if I'm not mistaken). They serve Western food, pasta and soups =)

What keeps me coming back there is the Beef Goulash Soup and Grilled Pepper Steak cooked medium well. I like the taste of the soup and the fillings are pretty much generous. It's eaten with garlic bread on the side that I usually dip in the soup and ate with a chunk of the beef. Thinking about it makes me drool already, yum yum...

The grilled pepper steak came with the sides of fries and steamed vegetables. The steak was cooked to perfection and the taste of the black pepper was present, but not overwhelming. The texture was firm, not hard, with slight redness on the inside.

I ordered the chicken steak topped with white sauce and french fries on the sides. I like the clean taste of the chicken and the way it was cooked. It wasn't too oily considering that it is fried and I like the steamed vegetables especially the baby corns. That's because it was steamed and topped with a knob of butter, so it has a buttery taste to it.

My boyfriend and I usually drank chocolate milkshake everytime we dine here. It's creamy, chocolatey and not too sweet. The price is affordable and matches the taste of the food. So, it is worth a try if you are ever in Kelapa Gading area.

Brownies Anyone?

Today, I had my classes start at 7.30-ish and ended at 8.30 ish. I only had the morning report from yesterday's triage duty with 10 patients. The rest of the day is spent at home, wondering what I should do next. So, I decided to bake something since it has been along time since my last cook off. I flipped through my recipes (since it is on the computer, I wouldn't exactly call it flipping) and saw this old one I had saved but never tried before. It was named Chocolate Fudge Brownies. I remembered taking it from a website several months ago, but was too preoccupied to bake this. Finally, I did it today..

I prepared the ingredients to make this "elegant looking" brownies by grabbing butter and chocolate chips from the fridge, sugar, flour and cocoa from the kitchen shelves.

Chocolate Fudge Brownies

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
2 1/4 cups sugar
4 large eggs
1 1/4 cups unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups flour
2 cups chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 180 o C

Melt the butter. Take off from heat.

Add the sugar and stir to combine. Return to heat briefly until it's hot, not bubbling.

Transfer to a mixing bowl.

Stir in cocoa, salt, baking powder and vanilla extract.

Add the eggs, beat untill smooth.

Stir in the flour and chocolate chips. Transfer to baking pan and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Cool on a wire rack and serve. I usually put the brownies in the fridge after they have come to room temperature, just until they are firm. and eaten with ice cream or by themselves.

Cava Lunch

Today's restaurant review will be on a restaurant located in Cikini called Cava. It's a small cafe located across TIM (Taman Ismail Marzuki) and is actually pronounced sya-fa. I know. I'm not good at French, it's supposed to be an informal greeting to one another. Well, my friends and I decided to have lunch there today.

I first found out about Cava from a friend of mine and she suggested to have lunch there since it's close to campus. This cafe has a nice interior where almost every table has a sofa so we don't have to haggle in order to have the best seat in the cafe.

What I especially adore from this place is the interior design and the atmosphere that the place offers. It has a sense of peace and serenity, plus the food are pleasing in taste and appearance. You'll see what I mean in the next pictures. The food just looked too beautiful too eat, especially the dessert called "Cava Lava". It is a chocolate molten lava cake with strawberries and vanilla ice cream accompanied with a caramel pole. Confused? Just witness the stunning picture of Cava Lava.
